    Key highlights:

    • Kalshi and Polymarket have donated at least $5 million to Republican and Democratic groups ahead of the US midterms
    • Republicans have received around $2.7 million, while both prediction market platforms face growing regulatory scrutiny
    • Polymarket CEO has expanded his political donations to Republicans, with contributions reaching about $1.3 million

Prediction market giants Kalshi and Polymarket are becoming more involved in US politics ahead of midterm elections. These platforms and their founders have reportedly donated about $5 million to political groups from both major parties.

Kalshi and Polymarket donate $5M to political groups

According to a Reuters report, Kalshi and Polymarket, two major prediction market platforms, have increased their connections with US politics. Ahead of the US midterm elections, they have donated about $5 million to support both Republicans and Democrats.

This donation is noteworthy as it marks a significant increase from the 2024 election cycle. During the previous election, prediction market companies had only a smaller presence in political funding. The donation also includes a $1 million previously reported to have been contributed by Polymarket to House of Majority Forward.

Reportedly, Republicans received around $2.7 million from the companies so far. The remaining amount was given to Democratic groups. It is also important to say that more than one-third of the total donations went to state-level political groups supporting candidates for governor, attorney general, and state legislatures.

As Kalshi stated, its political donations will be distributed roughly evenly between the two major parties by Election Day. Kalshi’s head of federal government relations, John Bivona, stated, “Regulation that keeps prediction markets safe for consumers and allows them to grow in America isn’t a partisan issue.”

Prediction market faces growing regulatory pressure

The latest political donation from Kalshi and Polymarket comes amid the growing scrutiny these prediction market platforms face in the US. Several states are challenging their prediction market operations. The authorities argue that the platforms violate state gambling laws.

The prediction market platforms are also facing scrutiny from federal lawmakers over possible insider trading. CoinCodex recently reported a similar incident, where Kalshi’s Ethereum perpetual futures came under scrutiny. The reports identified unusual trading activity, with a wide gap between the trading volume and open interest, indicating possible wash trading activity.

While these regulatory challenges could affect how Kalshi and Polymarket operate in the future, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is taking the initiative to expand its prediction market regulations, marking a significant milestone for platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket.

David Primo, a political science professor at the University of Rochester, stated that the industry is trying to understand the regulations. He added,

“We have an industry where we’re kind of figuring out the regulations on the fly. If you’re not engaging with these politicians, other people are going to be writing these regulations, and that could be an existential threat to these companies.”

Shayne Coplan expands donations to Republicans

Meanwhile, reports also revealed that Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has traditionally supported Democratic candidates and groups. But now, his political donations have expanded to include Republicans during the current election cycle.

Campaign finance records show that Polymarket and Coplan have directed about $1.3 million to Republican committees and candidates. Coplan also continues to support Democratic groups. The contribution includes donations to the Republican National Committee, a political action committee supporting House Republicans, and V-PAC.
